My Bookmarks

My bookmarks find themselves wedged between all kinds of books. Sometimes they are in the first few pages of a fiction book that I dare to start when I only have 10 minutes to spare. Sometimes they are in five books at a time, other times only two. They wiggle their way into different genres: creative non-fiction, fiction, spiritual, memoir, educational. My bookmarks are usually thick nature postcards or old pictures of my itty bitty nieces and nephews. I tend only to use bookmarks that have sentimental value. No receipts, post-its or scrap paper for me.

So where are they now?

January 2018

In 2017 I finished roughly 35 books. These are 7 books that I rated 5 stars on Goodreads.

The Patron Saint of Liars by Ann Patchett
Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell
This is the Story of a Happy Marriage by Ann Patchett
Scary Close by Donald Miller
When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
On Living by Kerry Egan
Of Mess and Moxie by Jen Hatmaker

Just Finished:

My bookmark from Bread and Wine by Shauna Niequist has a little bit of water damage. I was sick last week and spent a lot of time in the bathtub to break up my cough. I loved this book because it stretched me to think outside of my comfort zone when it comes to food and hospitality. Cooking and entertaining is not my strong suit, but she helped me reframe my thinking when I envision spending time with friends around the table. Since she spent a lot of time living in Grand Rapids, I chuckled at her references to the chilly weather and cloudy days.

I also just finished Of Mess and Moxie by Jen Hatmaker and absolutely loved her essays. She is hilarious. And smart. And sassy, and I could just eat it up all day long.

The last fiction book I read was Peace like a River by Leif Enger and it was worth every single page. His writing is so poetic and rich. I loved the characters and the ending was spiritual, intimate and so satisfying.
